The recipes we are about to share are very effective and use less harsh ingredients compared to their commercial counterparts. We think this will provide tremendous benefit to the horse and rider. Many of our fly sprays will include all natural essential oils, that the flies will want to avoid.

Are you on a budget? So are we! Another major reason to try to homemade fly spray is due to its money saving qualities. As a well-known penny pincher, I try to save money when and where I can. If it is beneficial to my horse and my pocketbook, that is a win-win situation.

Homestead Favorite Fly Spray Recipe #1


  • Raw Apple Cider Vinegar
  • Tea Tree Essential Oil
  • Citronella Essential Oil
  • Lemongrass Essential Oil
  • Cedar Essential Oil
  • Dish Soap
  • Fractionated Coconut Oil (or other oil)
  • Measuring Cup
  • Measuring Spoon
  • Tap Water
  • Spray Bottle

Step By Step Instructions:

1. Measure out 2 cups of raw apple cedar vinegar. This will serve as the base of your fly spray recipe. As we know with humans, apple cider is good for so many things. It has been proven to be excellent for human health, and can now help your favorite equine.

2. Next, you will add in your essential oils. This recipe requires 20 drops of each oil. First add in the tea tree oil, next add citronella, lemongrass, and cedarwood. These are wonderful oils to add and can really prevent the flies for being attracted to your horse. Since, you are Homemade Fly Spray For Horsesonly using 20 drops of each, you will have plenty left to make another batch in the future.

3. You can use any cooking oil you like, but at Natural Equestrians we prefer the use of fractionated coconut oil. Add in 2 tablespoons of coconut oil to the mixture. Coconut oil is an excellent choice, as it is a perfect coat conditioner and anti-microbial. It will be an excellent addition to your horses skin and coat.

4. Last, you will add in two cups water. There should be an equal apple cider vinegar to water ratio. This makes the perfect fly spray solution for your horse.

This fly spray recipe was gotten straight off the homestead from ART and BRI. It has many good qualities and natural ingredients. You can also add in additional oils, like peppermint if you choose. If you want a stronger fly spray you could add a few additional drops of citronella or even tea tree oil.

While you can use other oils, coconut oil has so many beneficial properties for the horses coat and skin, that we feel this will be the best addition. Who doesn’t want to see their horse shined up like a new penny? We feel that this is a very cost effective and excellent spray for your equine friend.

The Budget Equestrian Fly Spray- Recipe # 2


  • Citronella Essential Oil
  • Lemongrass Essential Oil
  • Peppermint Essential Oil
  • Fractionated Coconut Oil
  • Lavendar Essential Oil
  • Raw Apple Cider Vinegar
  • Sunscreen Spray
  • Liquid Soap (natural brand preferred)
  • Water
  • Spray Bottle

Step By Step Instructions:

1. First, you will measure and pour 2 cups of water into your spray bottle. This will serve as the base for all the ingredients that will be added next.

2. You will measure out 1 cup of apple cedar vinegar. The original recipe calls for white vinegar, but we are always about using ingredients in Homemade Fly Spray For Horsestheir natural form, so we are recommending apple cider vinegar for all of its wonderful health benefits for the body and the coat of your horse.

3. Next, add in 2/3 of a cup of liquid baby sunscreen. It is recommended that you use a high SPF such as SPF 50. This is a wonderful addition for your horse’s coat and skin. Especially if they will be out in the direct sunlight.

4. Add 2 tablespoons of gentle dish soap. As a side note, I had always wondered the purpose behind the dish soap, but it is to help bind all the ingredients together. This is a very natural binder without adding harsh chemicals to the mix.

5. Now it is time to add in the essential oils. You can add them in any order you chose. Be sure to add 1 1/2 tablespoons of the citronella, lemongrass, peppermint, and lavender essential oil. These ingredients really pack a punch and will help keep all of those pesky flies at bay! I love harnessing the power of nature!

6. Add in a 1/2 cup of fractionated coconut oil. At Natural Equestrians we love Coconut Oil, because of all of its health benefits, conditioning and anti-microbial properties.

7. Last, pour in an additional cup of water. This will serve as a great base for the wonderful ingredients you have added. It is now time for the fun part! Put the lid on, and give your bottle a SHAKE, SHAKE, SHAKE. You are now ready to go to the barn.

  1. I don’t have horses, but I have been looking for all natural spray to keep the flies away from my dogs and away from the house. We have terrible problems with flies this time of year in Arizona. I am totally excited to give these a shot- I have almost all the ingredients at home already as an essential oil lover.
    I did have a question- about how long would you say these sprays last? A day or two? A few hours?

They happen to be completely customizable so you can adjust the oils as you see fit. We truly hope this helps you!
